The creature stared at his master, unmoving, ignoring his command. For the first time it dawned on him that he had a choice, that he didn’t have to wait. He took one step away from the house, then another, feeling whatever bound him to the priest begin to weaken with every step. Freedom. He could smell it on the wind, taste it in his mouth.
